Sudan: West Darfur El-Geneina. Mistrei village has witnessed the massacre and killing of approximately 60 civilians and more than 50 wounded. Houses were looted and burnt down and numerous people displaced to the IDP camp:
On July, 26, 2020 Mistrei village in West Darfur El Geneina was attacked from all directions by armed militias of the Arab tribe. The incident which has been raging on since five days ago left dozens of people dead and injured, several villages and houses burned down, and an unconfirmed number of people newly displaced in the camp.
According to reports by the Doctors Committee in West Darfur, preliminary data collected showed 60 were killed and 54 wounded, some of whom were evacuated to Al-Selah Medical Hospital in El Geneina.
The attacks were reportedly organized by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) supported by around 500 armed Arab militias, some of whom reportedly came from Chad. The attackers were riding in motor vehicles, camels, horses and some were on foot. They attacked with heavy weapons and machine guns.
This is the second major attack by armed militias in Misterei during in that week, following the attack on peaceful demonstrators on July 17, 2020 which incident left 17 civilians injured. It is noteworthy that the peaceful sit-ins were beginning to take place in different cities and across other areas of Darfur to protest and also demand protection against armed militias who continue to attack civilians on their farms as well as engage in the wanton destruction of their livelihood.
As we remember the casualties, we extend our heartfelt condolences and best wishes for a speedy recovery to those who have been affected in these incidents.
