Statement on the current Human Rights Violations in Kalma Camp- Nyala South Darfur.

(May 8, 2022) Darfur Network for Monitoring and Documentation (DNMD) strongly condemned this violence and killing of the internally displaced persons IDPs.  We are calling on those responsible to be held accountable. They underscored the urgent need for rapid implementation of protection of civilians, and we emphasized that a feeling of durable peace in the Darfur region is inextricably linked to a civilian transition to democracy.

On May 7, 2022, at approximately 6 pm, in Kalma camp for IDPs, South Darfur-Nyala, was attacked by a group of displaced youths on a football field south of Kalma camp, armed militias riding two vehicles, one of them white and the other gray.

According to the eyewitnesses from Kalma, the IDPs told Darfur Network for Monitoring and Documentation (DNMD) that; armed militias killed 3 and 5 wounded civilians after that, they fled towards the Southern part of the camp in brick ambushes and fired live ammunition at the displaced persons who were working in ambushes. They were seriously wounded, which led to the death of Suleiman Ibrahim Mohammed Wadi 35, Ishaq Abkar Issa 45 old, and SudamAbdullah Ibrahim 35 years old, and they wounded: Eman Altaher Hassin, Issa Adam Daoud , Wali Abdul Jabar Saleh , Adam Daoud Abdul Jabar, and Abdul-Manan Abdul -Jabar ) all of them lived in Kalma camp.

The South Darfur State Security Committee has announced: Two reports were opened at the local police station in Bilal, affiliated with South Darfur State, with the numbers 409/410 under Article 130 of the Criminal Code of 1991, and the bodies were transferred to Nyala Teaching Hospital for autopsy purposes, also the formation of an emergency room, after three civilians were killed and others injured when gunmen opened fire in Kalma camp on the displaced, near the South Darfur capital of Nyala.

In addition, one of the HRDs in Kalma camp said: “the situation inside the Kalma camp is dangerous, and anxiety and panic afflicted the displaced, especially after the leaks from the militias with their desire to transform Kalma camp like Karinak camp, knowing that the siege of Otash camp is still in place, in addition to the fact that two IDPs were killed in Salam camp South of Nyala. The situation in IDP camps in South Darfur is very dangerous”.

DNMD is very concerned about the human rights situation in the Darfur region which has continued to deteriorate since the military coup of 25 Oct 2021 and therefore, calls upon;

  • The GoS of South Darfur state authorities to protect IDPs in Kalma in South Darfur and take urgent steps to prevent human rights violations after the killing of four (4) IDPs who were attacked by armed assailants.
  • Urges United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) to continue protecting civilians in those camps.
  • Appeals to the UN Panel of Experts on Sudan to take into account these reports in their regular review of the situation on the ground according to their mandate of monitoring violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
